How to Choose the Right Deck Material

When it comes to building a deck, the material you choose matters more than most people realize. It affects how your deck looks, how long it lasts, and how much maintenance you're signing up for. Here's a straightforward breakdown of the three most common options.

Pressure-Treated Wood This is the most affordable option and still the most common. It holds up well in West Virginia's climate as long as it's properly sealed and maintained. Plan on staining or sealing it every 2–3 years to prevent cracking and weathering. If you're working with a tighter budget, pressure-treated is a solid choice — just be ready to put in some upkeep.

Composite Decking Composite is made from a mix of wood fiber and plastic. It looks great, resists moisture, and doesn't need to be stained or sealed. The trade-off is upfront cost — composite runs significantly more than pressure-treated. But over 10–15 years, the lower maintenance costs tend to even things out. If you want something low-effort that holds its appearance, composite is worth the investment.

PVC Decking PVC is 100% synthetic — no wood fiber at all. It's the most resistant to moisture, mold, and insects. It also tends to be the priciest. For homeowners who want near-zero maintenance and maximum durability, PVC is the top tier option.

So which one is right for you? It comes down to budget and how much maintenance you're willing to do. If you want the lowest upfront cost and don't mind occasional upkeep, go pressure-treated. If you want something that holds up with minimal effort, composite or PVC is the way to go.
