How to Pick the Right Paver Pattern

The pattern you choose for your pavers affects more than just looks — it also impacts structural stability and how well the surface holds up over time. Here's a breakdown of the most common options and where each one works best.

Running Bond This is the classic brick pattern — each row offset by half a paver. It's clean, simple, and works well for walkways and paths. Easy to install and easy on the eye without being too busy.

Herringbone Pavers laid at 45 or 90-degree angles in a zigzag pattern. This is one of the strongest patterns structurally — the interlocking angles distribute weight and resist shifting, which makes it the top choice for driveways that take vehicle traffic. It takes more cuts and more time to install, but the performance is worth it.

Basket Weave Pairs of pavers laid alternating horizontally and vertically to create a woven look. It's a classic choice for patios and low-traffic areas. Not ideal for driveways — it doesn't interlock as well under heavy load.

Cobblestone / Random Pattern An irregular, old-world look achieved with pavers of varying sizes. Works great for accent areas, fire pit surrounds, or decorative borders. More time-intensive to lay correctly, but it creates a distinctive finished look.
