How We Waterproof a Deck the Right Way

A deck that isn't properly waterproofed won't last. Water gets into the wood, causes rot, warps boards, and eventually compromises the structure underneath. Here's how we approach waterproofing on every deck we build or restore.

Start With the Right Products Not all sealers and stains are created equal. We use penetrating sealers that soak into the wood rather than sitting on top — they bond at the fiber level and hold up far longer than surface coatings that peel and chip.

Clean the Surface First Sealer applied over dirt, mildew, or old coating won't bond properly. Before anything goes on, the deck gets cleaned and any old failing finish gets stripped. This step gets skipped a lot. It shouldn't be.

Pay Attention to the End Grain The cut ends of deck boards absorb water faster than any other surface. They need extra sealer attention. This is where rot starts on most decks that weren't finished correctly.

Don't Forget the Ledger and Joists The framing underneath is just as important as the boards on top. We treat the structural components during the build to protect against moisture from below.

Reapply on Schedule Even the best sealer wears down over time. Most decks need a fresh coat every 2–3 years depending on sun exposure and weather. A quick inspection each spring tells you where you stand.

Done right, waterproofing adds years to your deck's life. If your deck hasn't been sealed recently or you're not sure what's on it, give us a call at (681) 207-6114.
