What to Know Before Building a Shed

A new shed seems simple until you're halfway through the project and hit a snag you didn't see coming. Here's what to sort out before you break ground.

Check Your Local Permits In most West Virginia counties, sheds over a certain square footage require a permit. The threshold varies by location, so check with your local building department before you start. Building without a permit when one's required can create problems when you sell your home.

Know Your Setbacks Setbacks are the minimum distances your shed must sit from property lines, fences, and your house. Most areas require at least a few feet on each side. Measure before you plan — nothing worse than pouring a foundation and finding out it's in the wrong spot.

Pick the Right Foundation You've got options: concrete slab, gravel pad, concrete blocks, or pressure-treated skids. The right choice depends on your shed size, the ground conditions, and whether you want it to be permanent or moveable. A proper foundation keeps your shed level and dry for years. Skip it and you'll be dealing with rot and shifting floors down the road.

Think About Access Where are the doors going? Can you get a lawnmower or ATV in and out easily? Think through how you'll actually use the space before you finalize the layout.

Storage vs. Workshop A shed built for storage is different from one built for a workspace. If you plan on spending time in there, think about windows for light, ventilation, and whether you want electrical run to it.

Getting these details right upfront saves time, money, and headaches. At Zinc's Home Improvement, we handle shed builds from the ground up. Call us at (681) 207-6114 to talk through your project.
